Le livre officiel à paraître en 2017

This Is the Noise That Keeps Me Awake, phrase extraite du titre "Push It" en 1998, et c'est aussi le titre du livre officiel de Garbage, écrit en collaboration avec Jason Cohen (journaliste au magazine américain Rolling Stone) et à paraître le 11 juillet 2017 aux éditions Akashic Books, en anglais et au prix de 27 € pour 170 pages (tel qu'il est présenté en précommande sur amazon).
En couverture, le groupe photographié par Lindsay Byrnes en avril 2016 sur le tournage de leur clip vidéo "Empty", premier single extrait de leur dernier album "Strange Little Birds".

Déjà, un extrait circule: Butch Vig, batteur: “It was 1995, we were finishing our debut album, and I was stressed. A lot of music business people had told me it was a mistake to give up full-time music production to start a band. So I ignored them all and took a leap of faith. The simplest reason was that I just wanted to be in a band with my friends. I’d been playing with Duke and Steve for several years, and now we had a new beginning with an X factor: a Scottish singer named Shirley. She seemed like a good fit for our little club of misfits. So we all took that leap.”

D'entrée, clarifions l'affaire : Garbage n'est pas le groupe de Butch Vig, mais un groupe dont il fait partie. Nuance. D'autant plus que la genèse de ce projet remonte à 84, lorsque Butch et Steve Marker montent leur propre studio. Ils rencontrent Duke Erikson peu après. Après quelques projets communs - les groupes Spooner et Firetown - Vig devient le producteur à succès (Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana) que l’on sait, sans couper les ponts avec ses vieux acolytes. De nouveau réunis aujourd'hui, ils ont enrôlé l'exquise Shirley Manson, lèvres pulpeuses et voix aguicheuse. Leur premier album est une pure merveille : mélodies pop sur strates de guitares trafiquées, perversité technologique et robustesse rythmique. Une formule obsédante qui promet à Garbage - et au rock - un avenir radieux.

Ils sont là pour se faire remarquer: ils jouent n'importe où. Ils ont donné un concert à l'Ubu dans l'après-midi, ils essayent maintenant le bar VIP de la salle omnisports, devant quelques mines un peu longues et une lumière un peu jaune, ils tournent les talons. On les retrouve donc à l'extérieur vers minuit, pas loin d'une porte où traînent quelques curieux, contre un mur de béton, dans un coin noir semé de papiers. La bruine est fine, ils sont à l'abri, ils sont deux et, côté bazar, se débrouillent comme pas deux.
(...) Même impression un peu plus tôt dans la soirée avec Garbage, le groupe de Butch Vig, l'ancien producteur de Nirvana. Emmené par Shirley Manson, une jeune Ecossaise bien sûre d'elle, toute en noir derrière son boa rose, le groupe file droit sans prendre de risque superflu. La rythmique tourne à plein, la mise en place reproduit au plus juste les effets du disque, les riffs de guitare façon Stooges font leur petit effet sur le public rennais. Rien de franchement renversant, mais Butch Vig a des idées en pagaille, la Shirley en question a du coffre et de l'abattage, un peu de Chrissie Hynde dans les jambes et une voix qui peut porter loin. Un coup à la Cranberries n'est pas à exclure. Cette soirée fut réussie: programmation bien calée, salle comble malgré la grève qui a causé bien des soucis aux organisateurs.

München - „I’m only happy when it rains“, singt Shirley Manson voller Inbrunst. Prompt schimpfte die Garbage-Frontfrau über den schwülwarmen, sonnigen Samstagnachmittag beim Rockavaria. Das Konzert war dennoch großartig.
Tatsächlich ruft sie ihren Fans zu: „Ich leide heute für euch – meine weiße schottische Haut ist einfach nicht an die Sonne gewöhnt. Fuck sunshine! Fuck the sun!“ Trotzdem hängt sich die charismatische Sängerin wie immer ordentlich rein:
Sie schmettert kräftig, schreit gequält, haucht lasziv, hüpft im Leopardenkleid wie Pippi Langstrumpf über die Bühne, wirft sich auf den Boden, singt „Why do you love me?“ auf dem Rücken liegend und powert sich durch zwei Jahrzehnte Bandgeschichte, angetrieben von zwei schrammelnden E-Gitarren und den druckvollen Drums des Soundtüftlers Butch Vig.
Kompromisslose Alternative-Rock-Klänge bringen den Fans ihre verloren geglaubte Jugend zurück – angefangen von Songs wie „Stupid Girl“ vom großartigen 1995er-Debüt bis hin zur neuen Single „Empty“, die Appetit macht auf das im Juni erscheinende sechste Studioalbum des quirligen Quartetts.

- Le nom de Manson, porté par Marilyn (Manson) et Charles (le gourou tueur: référence non comprise par l'intervieweur !).
- Ils n'ont pas vu les concerts donnés la veille au Festival (Shirley s'est reposée, elle a surtout dormi: les voyages, boire de la bière, dancer, jouer de la musique et aller se coucher).
- La couverture du magazine Details avec Shirley et Gavin Rossdale de Bush: pour Shirley, Gavin est charmant mais il était nerveux lors de la séance photos car ils ne s'étaient jamais rencontrés avant et ont du poser ensemble de façon très rapprochée, c'était étrange mais sympa.
- Shirley n'a pas changé beaucoup les paroles quand elle a rejoint le groupe car peu de paroles avaient été écrites. C'est un travail de collaboration à quatre mains. Pour Steeve, les paroles étaient horribles avant l'arrivée de Shirley, car le but était de monter un groupe cool et d'enregistrer un disque.
- Shirley et Steeve sont déconcertés (et semblent dégoutés) par le pied du présentateur.
- Shirley a participé aux ARIA Music Awards (cérémonie australienne) où elle a remis un prix à Dave Graney (le roi de la Pop en Australie): elle ne l'avait jamais rencontré avant, et en montant sur le podium pour recevoir son prix, il a ignoré Shirley; il a embrassé et remercier Chrissie Hynde mais pas un regard vers Shirley.

If you believe what you read in the 90s, Shirley Manson enjoys golden showers, is ‘sex on a stick’ and looks like Tina Turner on rhino tranquilisers when she lip-syncs. She’s also not the kind of girl you’d want to take home to your mother, more the kind of woman who’d serve cold rat to her crippled and imprisoned sister for a laugh.

“It wasn’t even slightly undermining terminology,” laughs Shirley Manson, recalling the obscenity of what the press (read: middle-aged music schlubs) have written about her. “Looking back, I didn’t say or do anything particularly wild or crazy. I’m actually pretty fucking together. It was just a way for people to undermine me, but that’s life.”

People tend to be intimidated by icons. The crazier the rumour, the greater the icon – and the bigger the threat. There’s no doubt that Manson is both. For three decades, the (formerly) flame-haired Garbage frontwoman has refused to compromise, subverting stereotypes and writing her own narrative in an industry still dominated by men. Manson, who began as an alternative voice for a generation of disaffected kids, has emerged as a true role model, speaking out against sexism and ageism while articulating the change she wants to see.

“I’ve always felt that the truth is powerful, even though it’s sometimes difficult to stomach,” says Manson. Today, the Edinburgh-born musician is back in her adopted hometown of LA (“I just love the dark, seedy underbelly of Tinseltown”) for a few days before heading out on tour with Garbage to promote their new album, Strange Little Birds. Here, she talks orgasms, Marilyn Manson, and giving as good as she gets.

You’ve always spoken so openly about sex. I remember reading that you bought a bright orange Fender guitar because you wanted it to match your pubic hair, which is amazing.
Shirley Manson: That’s true, I liked the colour of it. (laughs) I think I’m a truth-seeker, I’ve spent my entire life that way and I’m not entirely sure why. I think that when you’re seeking the truth, you want to explode all the bubbles. You see them and you just want to take a pin and burst them. I think I was probably bright and realised that sex was being used in an exploitative fashion – it was being appropriated and used in power-play. I didn’t like the power it had over me, so I decided to destroy it.

Did growing up in a ‘nice girls don’t talk about sex’ type of environment impact that ?
Shirley Manson: Yes, I think it’s only recently that I’ve become more and more outraged about the inequality regarding female sexuality. I guess it was spurred by the onslaught of celebrities who were posting photographs of their bums on social media. I wanted to examine what that meant. As ape-like as it was, it did make me very aware of how we weren’t encouraged to think of ourselves as sexual in any way, shape or form in my generation. In the 70s and 80s, it was seen as shameful that women had any kind of sex drive. If we did, we were called ‘sluts’ and ‘whores’, and really, really frightening terminology was used to describe any woman who had any sexual desire whatsoever. I’m grateful that I was rebellious as a young person and fought back against that.

Totally.
Shirley Manson: Now I’m really angry about it. Why is it that the entire sexual experience is couched in completely patriarchal terms? Why are we not expecting to have orgasms every time that we step up to the plate? Why is it a joke among women that we are somehow expected to fake an orgasm? I think women really need to start redrawing the playground in that regard. It’s important that we are sexually fulfilled – why should we be ashamed of our sex drives? Why shouldn’t the sexual act be pleasurable? It’s taken me a long time to get to this point where I’m truly outraged by it. I think of my teenage self and how we were almost conditioned by the idea that if we got into bed with somebody, as long as the male orgasm was achieved, there was success! It’s insanity. I’m grateful, particularly to Rihanna, who I think has changed the game in terms of how we view sexual women. To me, she feels completely equal with a male counterpart on a sexual level. She’s not being coy, she’s not playing power games, she’s not titillating and she’s not using her feminine wiles in a dangerous, dishonest way. I wish I’d had somebody like that when I was growing up.

What was your introduction to feminism?
Shirley Manson: Well, I read the Shere Hite Report (on female sexuality) when I was 14. My best friend Jane gave it to me and that’s where I discovered the female orgasm. I’d never, ever heard of it before and my mind and body were literally blown by this discovery. (laughs)

What happened next?
Shirley Manson: I became very loud. We had a teacher who was very much like Miss Jean Brodie, who had a clique of girls. It really was like that movie, where she sort of developed our confidence and our curiosity and introduced us to sex in literature. It was crazy. I got involved in a drama group and a band and became a professional show-off. I was quite insufferable, truth be told. I wanted to embarrass people with my body. I would be in rooms constantly showing my tits off… I’m so grateful that social media didn’t exist back then.

There’s one thing that I have to ask because I’ve heard rumours and wasn’t sure if it was true – about your boyfriend’s cornflakes? (Manson reportedly shit on an ex-boyfriend’s cereal. If someone treats you like shit…)
Shirley Manson: That is true.

Amazing! What’s the craziest rumour you’ve ever heard about yourself?
Shirley Manson: My favourite one is that I’m related to Marilyn Manson. It’s amazing because I’d love for him to be my brother! There’s always a myriad of things written about anybody in the press. Things get exaggerated, completely taken out of context or people get it wrong and write it down and then it’s fact. Welcome to the new world of Wikipedia.

Recently, you’ve said that you felt sexism was your generation’s problem. Why?
Shirley Manson: I don’t think that sexism is my generation’s problem, it’s a humanistic issue that has gone on since time began. But I do believe that the lack of desire to really stand up as a feminist has fallen out of vote and that is my generation’s fault. When my generation first emerged and broke out into the alternative music scene, we really pushed. We were vocal. We were passionate and we really fought to be heard. And we succeeded, but we just took our eye off the ball and a whole generation of young women came up behind us, thinking they didn’t have to be alert. I’m always saying to young women, ‘It would be wonderful if we lived in the Garden of Eden, but we don’t – so stay alert and fucking wake up.’ You cannot walk down the street naked and there not be consequences. I’m sorry, I’d love to tell you that you can, but you can’t. Be aware of what’s out there, be smart, learn what’s in the shadows and try to protect yourself at all costs against people who don’t want you to have equal rights. There are people who will look at you salaciously; people will objectify you. The thing is, I don’t entirely know what the answer to it is, either.

I think it’s about including both sexes.
Shirley Manson: Yes… I really do believe more and more that feminism is not a female subject. It’s a human issue that we all need to work towards, together: the faster we get that message across, the better. There are so many men who feel threatened by so-called ‘feminism’, and feminism isn’t about threatening anyone. It certainly isn’t about stealing anyone else’s power, it’s about sharing. The entire word has been obfuscated, deliberately so. I’m convinced that it’s deliberate.

When I read the way male music journalists described you in the 90s, you came under so much criticism, it’s crazy! You must have always felt so misrepresented?
Shirley Manson: Yes, life isn’t easy so you have to hone your skills and figure out how you’re going to survive, and I did. They didn’t hold me back in the end, but there are so many women who are not as articulate as I am, or not as well-versed in how to push it, and that’s what concerns me. Again, just the influence on women’s currency is so skewed towards beauty and youth. People might say, ‘Of course she says that, she’s not young any more.’ And that’s right, but what’s happening to me is going to happen to all of you – every single one of you, male or female! I don’t think what I’m talking about is any less relevant as a consequence of me being older. I want to make it better for all of y’all because it’s too late for me! (laughs)

You’re just trying to help prepare the next generation.
Shirley Manson: Doing the press for this record, I’ve spoken about the importance of women understanding that they have more value than just the way they look. I really believe in it passionately and a lot of people say, ‘Oh, she’s just moaning,’ but I’m not just moaning – I’m protesting. It’s for you. It’s not for me because I’ve had a great career and actually, I’ve got a number-one fucking rock record in America right now (Strange Little Birds topped the Billboard rock album chart on release in June). I’m speaking out for you because I want all women to bloom, to be unapologetic and have confidence in their skills, intelligence and integrity – all the things that they can’t see inside, which are important. They’re tools at their disposal. Your appearance? You have no control over it, you can’t even take credit for it because it had nothing to do with you! (laughs)

Let’s talk about the new album. You’ve said that vulnerability has played a big role in shaping it?
Shirley Manson: I think anyone with half a brain is aware that we’re living in treacherous times. I mean, I really, genuinely feel that. It’s the most tumultuous time that I can remember. I’ve grown up through the 70s, which were not easy in the UK, but I feel somewhat scared – particularly by the level of denial which seems to be in operation right now about what’s actually happening. When we went to make this record, there were a lot of things at play. Obviously, I’m not the only person in the band so there were a lot of other agendas too, but my agenda was certainly that I wanted to be truthful about the world I found myself in and what that meant. It was an exploration of that, rather than a focus on just making people feel good. There are enough artists doing that. Now we need to really step up and start speaking out. If we don’t do it, who will? Unfortunately, the business side of music has distracted musicians from their task, and has only allowed those who play the game, conform and play happy-go-lucky pop music, to survive. I think you see fewer and fewer musicians willing to speak up. We just live in a cowed society right now, across the board – you probably see it in your world.

It will be interesting to see what happens to people like Rihanna and Beyoncé over the course of time.
Shirley Manson: For me, Rihanna has the voice of a generation. She’s like a Billie Holiday to me. She can sing until she’s an old woman like Aretha Franklin, she’s got something magical inside her. Beyoncé’s been very smart, and that incredible record that she’s just released has elevated her game. It’s taken her out of being just a pop entertainer and into the role of an artist. She’s like, ‘I can’t just keep being cute and pretty and dance for everyone,’ she’s been able to have a second act and that’s why I find those two women so exciting. Beyoncé’s Lemonade, to my mind, is unquestionably a masterpiece. Everyone says it’s this and that – it’s ‘calculated’. So fucking what if it is? She’s done a great job. Is she just supposed to be accidentally great? Like, she just stumbled into it? She fucking worked her ass off to get there, to get this smart, to know where to go. Meanwhile, someone like Jack White is called a genius. Well, they’re playing the same game but somehow, for a man, it’s cool to be a genius but for Beyoncé, she’s just got to be the cute little honey over there with a nice outfit, dancing all day for everybody. God forbid she think of herself in a more elevated way than just an entertainer. Fuck off! Everyone can fuck themselves.

Quatre ans après l’album Not Your Kind of People, Garbage revient sur le devant de la scène avec « Empty. »

Premier extrait de Strange Little Birds, on y retrouve les ingrédients qui ont fait le succès de Garbage : refrain explosif, guitares déchaînées et paroles pleine d’auto-dépréciation d’une Shirley Manson toujours aussi désabusée. Bref, « Empty » n’invente rien, mais est efficace et nous téléporte dans les années 90. De la création de ce nouvel opus, qui sera distribué par Stunvolume, le label du groupe, la chanteuse déclare d’ailleurs :

Pour moi, cet album est celui qui est le plus en rapport avec notre premier album, par rapport aux autres. C’est comme se remettre dans l’état d’esprit d’un débutant. C’est en partie le résultat de n’avoir personne à qui rendre des comptes.

Et le clip, alors ? Encore une fois, un retour aux sources pour le groupe qui a fait appel à Sam Bayer à qui l’on doit déjà la première vidéo du groupe, « Vow » mais aussi celles de « Only Happy When it Rains » et « Stupid Girl. » La camera tourne et tourne et tourne autour de la meneuse du groupe, plus charismatique que jamais, les cheveux roses et toute de cuir vêtue. Confettis, lumières de toutes les couleurs et plans sur le reste le bande s’enchaînent. Ça donne un peu mal au crâne, mais c’est beau.

"Watch out for the killer beast!" warns Shirley Manson as she opens the door to her ivy-covered home in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles. Veela, her beige miniature terrier (she's a rescue), is barking alongside the Garbage frontwoman's Doc Martens-covered feet. She's loud, full of frenetic energy and ignoring repeated pleas for quiet. "You're so ramped up right now!" yells Manson, 49. "Just zip it!"

Veela, it seems, takes after her owner. Since 1995, when Garbage -- which also includes producer-instrumentalists Steve Marker, Duke Erikson and legendary Nirvana boardsman Butch Vig -- broke through with the hit "Only Happy When It Rains," Manson has been one of rock's loudest and most outspoken agitators, and an inspiration to future generations of alternative stars like Lana Del Rey and Amy Lee from Evanescence. Twenty-one years later, little has changed -- both in person and in her music. Garbage's sixth studio album, Strange Little Birds (due June 10 on its own imprint Stunvolume), is led by new single "Empty," an exploration of Manson's career-long themes of self-doubt and disconnection. Harking back to the band's classic Garbage and Version 2.0 era, when singles like "Stupid Girl" (No. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100) and "#1 Crush" (No. 1 on Alternative Songs) made Manson an icon for disaffected Gen-Xers, the song begins: "I've been feeling so frustrated. I'll never be as great as I want to be ... What's wrong with me ?"

"I'll feel really grateful for the success I've enjoyed, but then, at some point in the month, a dark Shirley returns -- and her voice gets really loud," says Manson of the song's lyrics while sitting in her living room, which is filled with art and travel books. "I'll feel like a f--ing idiot because I don't have goals. I have self-doubt and frustrations and disappointments. I think it's part of the human condition. Even someone like Beyoncé doesn't f--ing believe in herself 24/7!"

Manson readily admits, however, that her esteem issues go deeper than most. As a child in Edinburgh, Scotland, she was bullied and sometimes cut herself. She says she felt like an outcast for having red hair and recalls her mother, a big-band singer who died in 2008 (her father is a retired university lecturer), giving more attention to her two sisters. "My mom was always the hardest on me because I looked the most like her," she says, twirling her now dyed-pink hair. "She would tell my two sisters they were beautiful, but tell me I had a great personality. I just thought I was an ugly bastard."

A few years ago, Manson revealed she had a relationship with a teacher in school; but even before that, she was traumatized by her first sexual experience, as a young teen. "A boy fingered me, then grabbed a knife and told me he was going to stick it up my vagina. I was 13 years old," she recalls -- the first time she has ever publicly spoken about the incident. "It frightened the shit out of me." A couple of days later, she realized that she had left her bra at his house. The boy threatened to mail it to her parents.

"I think that's where it all began to unravel," says Manson. "I just had this realization: Why am I distrustful all the time? It's probably because of that. I spent so long disgusted about myself. I would sob in the bathroom, because I thought I was failing."

Manson began performing just a few years after that -- first with Scottish acts Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie and Angelfish, before being recruited by her Garbage bandmates and imported to the States in 1994. She learned to push painful memories and insecurities to the side when needed; now, she says, she has learned to embrace them. Earlier in May, she fell off the stage at KROQ Los Angeles' Weenie Roast. Naturally, the footage ended up all over the Internet. "I had a flame of embarrassment, but I landed on my feet like a ninja, so I didn't give a f--," she says with a laugh. "I want people to see my fall. I don't want to make a lie that I am this perfect person. I am a hot mess! It's OK to fall."

Manson, who dipped her toe into acting in 2008 with a role on Fox's Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, long has been touted as a left-field style icon. But she has come to despise the "peddling of the beauty myth by the media," she says. "We're taught prettiness is the highest currency. Look at Vogue magazine; they put Kim Kardashian on the cover. That is a devastating message to send to 99.9 percent of women around the world. I don't mean to be disrespectful to her, but why aren't scientists on the cover? Or a novelist? Or other women who are achieving great things in the world ?"

For a while there were whispers about Manson going solo, but Garbage is still going strong: A hiatus from 2005 to 2010 is well in the rearview mirror, and a long-gestating Manson album reportedly was shelved for good around the time that the band's last album, 2012's Not Your Kind of People, came out. "We get on each other's nerves, but we like each other," says Manson of her bandmates. She has been married to Billy Bush, Garbage's longtime guitar tech/engineer, for five years, and wrote the new song "If I Lost You," whose lyrics blur the line between passionate love and crippling jealousy, about their relationship. "I know a good one when I see one," she says of Bush, although she adds that she doesn't subscribe to the idea of everyone having one soulmate. "If he stopped making me happy, I wouldn't think twice about leaving him. He's probably in the other room thinking, 'Jesus f--ing Christ!' "

Manson smiles awkwardly and leans forward. "I don't know why I am telling you all this," she says. Then again, speaking her mind is one of the main reasons her music has connected with so many people -- and one of the main reasons she's still doing it. Growing Up
"My mom was always the hardest on me because I looked the most like her," says Shirley Manson, twirling her now dyed-pink hair. "She would tell my two sisters they were beautiful, but tell me I had a great personality. I just thought I was an ugly bastard."

The Peddling of the Beauty Myth
"We're taught prettiness is the highest currency. Look at Vogue magazine; they put Kim Kardashian on the cover. That is a devastating message to send to 99.9 percent of women around the world. I don't mean to be disrespectful to her, but why aren't scientists on the cover? Or a novelist? Or other women who are achieving great things in the world ?"

On Love
She has been married to Billy Bush, Garbage's longtime guitar tech/engineer, for five years, and wrote the new song "If I Lost You," whose lyrics blur the line between passionate love and crippling jealousy, about their relationship. "I know a good one when I see one," she says of Bush, although she adds that she doesn't subscribe to the idea of everyone having one soulmate. "If he stopped making me happy, I wouldn't think twice about leaving him. He's probably in the other room thinking, 'Jesus f--ing Christ!' "

On Self-Doubt
"I'll feel like a f--ing idiot because I don't have goals. I have self-doubt and frustrations and disappointments. I think it's part of the human condition. Even someone like Beyoncé doesn't f--ing believe in herself 24/7!"

'Flame of Embarrassment'
Earlier in May, Manson fell off the stage at KROQ Los Angeles' Weenie Roast. Naturally, the footage ended up all over the Internet. "I had a flame of embarrassment, but I landed on my feet like a ninja, so I didn't give a f--," she says with a laugh. "I want people to see my fall. I don't want to make a lie that I am this perfect person. I am a hot mess! It's OK to fall."

Le groupe commence par quatres dates aux Etats-Unis, des petits concerts, mais la première vraie date du "Strange Little Birds Tour" est en France, à Reims. Le groupe passe ensuite dans diverses villes d'Europe, avant de retourner aux USA pour l'été (du 18 juin au 03 août) pour revenir pour quelques dates européennes.
Eric Avery accompagne le groupe à la basse.
A noter: 5 dates en France dont 2 festivals: Reims (24/05), Lyon (03/06), Montereau (04/06 - festival), Grenoble (05/06), Landerneau (12/08 - festival).
Màj au 02/06/2016: Dû aux inondations qui sévissent actuellement dans certaines régions en France, le Festival de Montereau est annulé.

The band starts with four dates in the US, small concerts, but the first real date of the "Strange Little Birds Tour" is in France, in Reims. The group then performs in various cities in Europe, before returning to the US for the summer (from June 18th to August 3rd) and to come back in Europe for some dates.

Shirley Manson : Garbage et elle

Le deuxième album de Garbage, 2.0, fête ses 20 ans et s’offre une belle réédition. L’occasion de rencontrer la chanteuse du groupe, Shirley Manson, à Londres pour un petit flash back…

Une maison londonienne typique, avec bow window, petit jardin et adorable toutou en option… Plutôt que de s’entretenir avec les journalistes dans un hôtel, Shirley Manson a choisi le domicile d’une des amies de son label anglais. Tant mieux : toujours rousse, l’œil clair, la moue naturellement gouailleuse, elle est détendue et éclate de rire facilement. C’est parti pour une longue conversation sans non dits où on revient sur la genèse et le succès du second album de Garbage, 2.0., son féminisme et la manière dont elle a réussi à s’affirmer, les années passant et le recul aidant. Définitivement, miss Manson est l’une des icônes féminines les plus rock’n’roll de notre époque.

Vous souvenez-vous de l’enregistrement de 2.0 ?
On voulait faire une musique beaucoup plus futuriste que sur le premier album et on avait même un terme pour ça : sci-fi pop. Nos modèles, c’était Massive Attack, Portishead, les Chemical Brothers. On est retourné enregistrer aux Etats-Unis, dans le Wisconsin. La mère de Steve était en train de mourir, Duke vivait les meilleurs moments de son existence et Butch était plutôt en forme. Moi, j’étais résolue à rentrer dans le lard de tout le monde si besoin, m’affirmer davantage que sur le premier album où j’étais arrivée trop tard pour écrire la totalité des textes. Je suis très directe, je n’ai pas le temps d’être timide ou peureuse, c’est ce que j’ai voulu prouver avec 2.0.

Vous avez évolué dans un groupe d’hommes, mais avez collaboré avec des artistes féminines, de Blondie à Sky Ferreira… Besoin de solidarité ?
En tant que chanteuse d’un groupe de rock, j’ai rencontré beaucoup de malveillance ou de jalousie de la part d’autres musiciennes. Alors que je m’étais toujours senti à l’aise avec elles, car j’ai deux sœurs, je suis féministe… En me rapprochant de femmes artistes, j’ai clairement montré que je refusais cette compétition si facilement imposée par la société. Je veux voir les autres femmes comme des alliées. Notre force respective doit nous fédérer. Car même si on a plus de liberté que nos mères ou grand-mères, le chemin est difficile pour s’imposer…

Vous avez travaillé dur pour ça ?
Oui, et une fois que j’avais du succès, je m’en suis voulue… comme si je ne le méritais pas ! Ce n’est que maintenant que j’en profite et l’apprécie vraiment !

Pensez-vous toujours que 2.0 est la quintessence de Garbage ?
Oui. Si je devais choisir un seul album à jouer sur scène, ce serait celui-ci. Le premier album était un succès mais il était totalement bordélique. 2.0, lui, était parfaitement exécuté. Ce qui nous a aidé à ne pas trop vieillir, c’est que nos disques sont de drôles de mélanges. Sans doute parce que nous sommes tellement différents au sein du groupe. S’il y a quelque chose dont je suis fière, c’est ce son authentique et original.

Comment aviez-vous géré l’immense succès qui vous était tombé dessus à l’époque ?
C’était génial, et il nous a permis de faire 2.0 dans d’excellentes conditions, mais j’avais tendance à être agressive. Je suis définitivement très fragile, j’ai donc développé une faculté à tenir les gens éloignés afin d’éviter leurs coups et qu’ils ne se foutent pas de ma gueule. Avec le succès, j’ai d’autant plus gardé les gens à distance. Pourtant, je suis un agneau… Mais dans la presse, on te présente que d’une seule et unique manière, alors qu’en tant qu’humains, nous sommes une multitude de visages en une seule personne, selon notre expérience, notre passif. Bon, cela étant dit, je me contredis tout le temps…

Est-ce pour cette raison que vous êtes partie vivre à Los Angeles ?
Sans doute. On y est anonyme, on peut y renaître, même si on a l’impression d’être cassé en mille morceaux. En Ecosse, en Angleterre, j’étais jugée de toutes parts. J’avais terriblement peur de l’échec, et c’est dans cette nouvelle vie que j’ai accepté l’idée que tout pouvait voler un éclat. Mais que ce n’était pas grave ! J’ai mis beaucoup de temps à me sentir légitime.

Quand avez-vous réalisé que vous étiez une artiste à part entière ?
Jusqu’en 2012, je n’arrivais pas à me préfigurer comme une artiste, je portais ce statut aux nues et je me sentais très au-dessous. Cette année-là, j’ai retrouvé Garbage sur scène à Coachella, et j’ai vu plein de groupes jouer avant ou après nous. Non seulement j’ai réalisé que je n’étais pas moins douée, mais surtout que j’étais nettement meilleure ! Je suis rentrée chez moi, j’ai rappelé les membres de Garbage et je leur ai dit : « on fait un autre album, les gars ! Maintenant ! »

Qu’est-ce que ça fait de remporter un Icon Award, celui du magazine NME ?
Que ce magazine, avec qui j’ai eu une relation passionnelle pendant des années, me choisisse parmi toutes les chanteuses, ça m’a énormément touchée. J’étais très surprise aussi, car c’est vraiment venu de nulle part, Garbage n’ayant pas fait parler de lui ces dernières années ! Bref, j’étais ravie mais j’ai essayé de ne pas le prendre trop au sérieux, surtout avec mes amis qui me charrient en terminant leurs phrases par « n’est-ce pas, ô icône ? »

Qui sont vos propres icônes ?
J’aime David Bowie et Nick Cave mais j’écoute avant tout beaucoup de femmes. Surtout celles qui avait un véritable combat à mener et qui ont été assez généreuses pour partager leur intensité avec le reste du monde : Nina Simone, Maya Angelou, Billie Holiday, ma mère, ma grand-mère, qui était très admirative des suffragettes. Elle était brillante, diplômée en mathématiques et en astronomie, qui a réussi à élever ses enfants alors que son mari était décédé, tout en enseignant son savoir avec passion. C’était une badass granny !

Et vous, on peut dire que vous être tout aussi badass ?
J’espère bien. Et je le prends pour un compliment…
