Garbage have had an interesting and varied career since they first burst onto the alternative scene in 1995, formed by famed music producer Butch Vig and fronted by Scottish singer Shirley Manson; their debut album the self-titled Garbage sold over 4 million copies and hit Double Platinum in 1996.
Tonight the band finds themselves in deepest darkest Nottingham- Rock City to be precise (no matter how many times I walk through the doors at Rock City I’m reminded of how much I love the place. I’m sure I bang on about it every time I review a band here, I’m not sorry) and Rock City is packed; for some reason Shirley and the boys have only decided to do two UK dates on their new tour, one in London and one in Nottingham. How privileged I am to receive a VIP pass enabling me to watch the first 3 songs up close and personal from the comfort of the photo pit.
Garbage were born from Butch Vig remixing in the early 90s and as the band step on stage to opening track ‘Sometimes’ (also the opening track on the bands new album) the sub bass hit is enough to remind you of this fact, it’s loud, low and heavy. The band step on stage to a huge reaction from the crowd, a crowd that is certainly an eclectic mix. Unfortunately Butch Vig isn’t with the band tonight due to acute sinusitis. When you thought the Rock City crowd couldn’t get louder Shirley Manson steps out and the roof nearly gets blown off. Maybe this crowd is eclectic but one thing’s for sure they are certainly passionate and fired up.
Manson is a front woman of dreams; she is stylish, has a stand out voice, controls the stage and commands respect from fans and peers alike. Age seems to be having no bearing on this woman, she has an aggressive grace that was a very fashionable trait in the 90’s but seems to have made that look, style and attitude timeless. She prowls around her surroundings, circling around the stage like a caged animal, she is simply mesmerising; often staring down the crowd and at points it can feel quite intimidating.
Garbage play a solid set, their sound in this day and age doesn’t sound dated, it sounds unique. Their new album Strange Little Birds has some absolutely fantastic tunes on it that weave seamlessly into a set comprising of music made up from the past 3 decades. This for me was a real stand out gig, a band I have admired since my teens in a venue I adore with a crowd that is totally into it. Nights like this are magical and make me appreciate and feel blessed that I’m a live music fan.

Garbage may have been around for over 20 years, but they’re still as popular as ever. With a sellout crowd packed into Rock City – Nottingham’s popular music venue – all eagerly waiting to see if their idols have still got it. The answer? A resounding yes!
Hitting the road in support of their latest, sixth studio album, Strange Little Birds, Garbage sounded excellent live, especially with new single, Blackout. As the album was released during the same week, not everyone was familiar with all tracks, but I’m certain next time each individual will be singing the words back to them.
Of course, everyone wanted to hear the classic singles like, Only Happens When It Rains, I Think I’m Paranoid and Stupid Girl – which saw Shirley Manson prowling around the stage like a caged animal, almost snarling down at the audience, which was great to watch. With Shirley as a lead singer, you know you’re onto a winner: a stylish, cracking voice with a little added attitude makes a recipe for success.
Each and every song got a fantastic reception, one of my favourites of the night was Sex Is Not The Enemy. I have only one query for Garbage. Why only the two dates in the UK? Based on your sellout performance, there would be a huge amount of people who would want to see such a great live band – so hurry back!
